Dr. George Miley heard about the LENR announcement from a colleague, Steven Jones at Brigham Young University, a few days before it occurred. Although a group of his students at the University of Illinois initially experimented (unsuccessfully) with electrolytic cells based on the original Fleischmann and Pons design, Dr. Miley decided to pursue plasma loading for his subsequent experiments. Despite the fact that it was encouraged by Fleischmann, it had materials integrity problems during experiments that caused it to be abandoned.

At ICCF-5 in 1995, Dr. Miley became familiar with Jim Patterson’s LENR methods – experimental approach with metals coated plastic beads –  and initiated a collaboration with Patterson’s company, CETI, which lasted for several years. Dr. Miley then collaborated with a number of other individuals and organizations during the course of his LENR career. Much of his work utilized elemental transmutation rather than excess heat as the signature for LENR. Notwithstanding this, he and Lewis Larson formed a company, Lattice Energy, to develop heat production from Dr. Miley’s experimental design. After his work with Larson ended, Dr. Miley collaborated closely with Andre Lipson, who was from Russia, for several years. Subsequently he started a joint venture, named LENUCO, LLC with another firm. LENUCO was later acquired by Industrial Heat, and a collaborative research entity was started at the University of Illinois Research Park.

A major accomplishment of Dr. Miley for the LENR field was in his role as editor of the Journal of Fusion Technology of the American Nuclear Society. When LENR was rejected by mainstream science, nearly all scientific journals stopped accepting papers on the subject. Dr. Miley held the position that if a submitted paper could get through the peer review process involving three independent reviewers, it should be published. If the reviewers couldn’t identify an error in experiment or theory, the paper should go forward. Fusion Technology was therefore the sole venue for LENR publications in mainstream professional journals for several years.

An LRDI project was performed with Dr. Miley in 2019 and 2020. It included a site visit at his two laboratory locations at the University of Illinois in December 2019. Two interviews were conducted with Dr. Miley in November and December 2019.
