Dr. Edmund Storms was able to begin LENR experiments just a short time after Fleischmann and Pons made their March 1989 announcement. He was at the time a long-established scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), having worked there for 35 years as a nuclear chemist. Initially his experiments were with electrochemical cells (similar to those used by Fleischmann and Pons) with capture of evolved gas to search for helium as a product of the reaction. Subsequently, he used electrolytic cells with calorimeters for detection of excess heat as the LENR signature. Carol Talcott, also a LANL scientist, worked with Dr. Storms on the early experiments, and they were married in that timeframe. Dr. Storms retired from LANL in 1991 and continued LENR experiments in his home laboratory for another 34 years, until 2025. Besides electrolytic cells, he used several other methods, including gas discharge and gas loading.
In about 2013 Dr. Grimshaw began collaborating with Dr. Storms to pursue his interest in opening a new LENR lab located in Santa Fe, NM. Several draft proposals were prepared, some of them including Drs. Tom Claytor and Malcolm Fowler, who were also retired from LANL and were doing LENR research. Although none of the proposals received funding, strong working relationships were formed among the four participants. In 2015 Dr. Grimshaw changed his emphasis and began a project to document Dr. Storms’ extensive LENR research career. This project then became the pilot for the LRDI. It was first presented as a poster at the 21st International Conference on Cold Fusion (ICCF-21) in 2018. (Click here).

Interviews were conducted in April 2016, March 2017, and June 2017. All of the more than 22 cumulative hours of interviews were transcribed . Each “piece of the puzzle” – the components and interview transcripts – were described using a cover memo. These memos then served as the basis for preparation of project reports. The SLRDP found that there were eight phases in Dr. Storms” LENR research career up to the beginning of the project:
